Audi Style

The style of Audi vehicles has changed a lot over the years from its early beginnings. Audi AG's four ring emblem denotes the merger of Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. The four ring emblem forms the roots of Audi AG as we know it today. We will take a tour back in time in this article and look at different Audi vehicles, their styles and work our way up to the present and view the contrasts that have taken place over time. In 1921 the left-hand drive was introduced by Audi. In fact, Audi was the first German car manufacturer to showcase this type of vehicle. The left hand drive vehicle was named the Audi Type K. The left hand drive style vehicle allowed the driver to get a better view of the road and oncoming traffic, so in essence it was safer. In 1926 the Horch 303 Berlin was introduced. This German eight-cylinder car was the first of its kind to go into mass production. The engine contained double overhead camshafts and a 60 hp output. In 1931 the first volume built car containing four wheel drive was introduced by Audi. This vehicle had a wood style body garnished in imitation leather and a DKW two stroke engine. This vehicle became a big success throughout the 1930's. The year 1932 represented the merger of Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer to form Auto Union AG. The company developed innovative motorcycles and stylish vehicles for all different kinds of markets.

The first Audi front wheel drive was introduced in 1933 at the Berlin Motor Show. It had a modular design and a six-cylinder engine. The Auto Union also found great success in the racing industry. In 1934 Audi developed a racing car with a sixteen-cylinder engine that was put in place right behind the driver. This construction enhanced the vehicle's aerodynamics, and in 1937 racing cars produced by the Auto Union had gained a reputation for being some of the best constructed racing vehicles. In fact, the Auto Union car with 545 hp was the first of its kind to go beyond a speed of 400 km/h when driving on normal road conditions. The outbreak of World War II led the Auto Union to produce more military style vehicles during this time, but after the war, Auto Union was broken down and a new company by the name of Auto Union GmbH was established. The first post war vehicle produced by this company was a DKW Meisterklasse 89 P and came in a saloon style and four seat Karmann convertible style car. In 1964, Auto Union GmbH was taken over by Volkswagenwerk AG. Two stroke engine development was halted when Auto Union GmbH became part of Volkswagen, but a four-cylinder four stroke engine was introduced in one of the last DKW models, the F 102 and showcased as an Audi style vehicle in 1965.

In 1968 Auto Union unleashed the Audi 100. This vehicle boosted Audi into upper mid-size class market for the first time and became a big time seller. In 1972 the Audi 80 was introduced. This vehicle had a four-cylinder OHC engine and became a huge hit with the Volkswagen group. Tons of models were built and sold over a six year period, making this car a big time smash hit! The 1970's also brought about an energy crisis, but Audi answered this problem with the introduction of the Audi 50. This small style vehicle helped during the gas crisis of the 70's and was also a big hit. Audi continued to develop and innovate new styles throughout the 80's and 90's. In 1989 the first Audi turbo diesel with direct injection was introduced. Fuel consumption was reduced with this type of vehicle, and the Audi 100 was showcased in Frankfurt at their annual Motor Show. In 1994 the Audi A8 was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show. This vehicle had an all aluminum body style, the first of its kind. Modern day Audi's continue to impress. Audi SUVs have now been introduced into the market as demand for more style and luxury has reached an all time high. Audi SUVs are perfect for both on-road and off-road driving. The spacious interiors allows seating for 5-7 people depending on the make and model and numerous electronic innovations that aid in driver safety on the road have also been implemented into modern day Audis.
